Diabetes

Diabetes is a common life-long health condition. There are 3.5 million people diagnosed with Diabetes in the UK and an estimated 549,000 people who have the condition, but don’t know it. (Diabetes UK)

There are two main types of Diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes – where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin

  • Type 2 Diabetes – where the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells don’t react to insulin

Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1. In the UK, around 90% of all adults with diabetes have Type 2. (NHS)

Oxygen Therapy helps many people with Diabetes

Research conducted in 2012 showed that Oxygen Therapy - breathing pure oxygen in a gently pressurised oxygen chamber could alter the response of the immune system to the development of diabetes.

Breathing pure oxygen under gentle pressure gets more oxygen into the bloodstream than usual. This can accelerate the body’s natural healing process. Oxygen Therapy can be particularly helpful in the treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcers. Even the most stubborn of diabetic foot ulcers, for example when there is a risk of amputation.

This is because Oxygen Therapy can help to:

  • Accelerate healing

  • Reduce pain

  • Increase energy

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Combat infection

Our registered charity welcomes anyone with any long term or neurological condition. We are proud to have the only Oxygen Chamber in Argyll.
